Sprinkler valves quietly control the water to each zone of your system — and when one fails, the symptoms can range from annoying to expensive. Here are the five clearest signs it's time for a valve repair or replacement.
1. A zone that won't shut off
If one zone keeps running long after the cycle should have ended — or never stops — a valve diaphragm or solenoid is usually stuck open. This wastes a surprising amount of water fast.
2. A zone that won't turn on
The opposite problem. If a single zone is dead while the others work, the valve solenoid may have failed or the diaphragm may be jammed shut.
3. Water weeping between cycles
Water seeping into a bed or bubbling from heads long after watering ends often points to a valve that isn't sealing. Debris or a worn diaphragm is a common culprit.
4. Low pressure to one zone
If just one zone has weak coverage while others are fine, a partially failed valve can be restricting flow.
5. Buzzing, clicking, or an old corroded valve box
Electrical noise at the valve or visibly corroded, cracked valve bodies mean the hardware is near the end of its life.
Repair or replace?
